A Doctor of Psychology, Nationally Certified Psychologist, Diplomate of the Psychotherapy Association, Kathie Mathis was former Director of Domestic Violence Programs for the Glendale YWCA, past Vice President of the National Association of Domestic Violence Counselors & Consultants, former National Trainer for the National Task Force for Protecting Children in the Courts, experienced administrator, program developer, advocate and counselor. Dr. Kathie has certifications in coaching, domestic violence (victim and batterer), drug/alcohol addictions, sex addictions, sex offender counseling, Pairs Relationship counseling, grant writing and Court Advocacy. She is a skilled observer of human interaction and a powerful international public speaker, teacher and trainer. Kathie is a state and national advocate who meets with legislators in Washington D.C. and California, as well as with California's Supreme Court Justice and Judicial Council, promoting legislation and safety measures for abused children and women.
Dr. Mathis took the lead on Prop 46, which provided $2.1 billion in new funding for affordable housing projects including $195 million in grants for capital development projects for emergency shelters and transitional housing. She helped with SB734 and currently has a legislative proposal being considered for a CCA (certified court advocate) type of program for abused women who don't have a voice when they go to court. She was appointed by the California Governor as a member of the California Department of Corrections VTEA Council and provides training to inmates and prison staff.
Dr. Mathis travels throughout the United States speaking and training nonprofits, churches, colleges, teachers, businesses and county employees. She has been on stage, television (including but not limited to: the "Dr. Phil Show," NBC Investigative Report, NBC's "Starting Over" program, KCAL 9 Murder in the Family, ABC Nightly News and ABCLive!) and numerous radio shows including the Rolonda Watts Show. Dr. Kathie hosts a cable television program "Real People Real Problems, Real Solutions" which offers solutions to problems with relationships, domestic abuse, child abuse and teen issues. Kathie has a solid commitment to behavioral change and has facilitated Batterers Intervention Programs and Anger Management groups for adults and teens. She is only one of three train the trainers recognized by the California State in Batterers Facilitation Certification. Dr. Kathie was invited to have lunch with President Bush on March 12, 2008 and receive the Congressional Medal of Merit.
Dr. Kathie Mathis is a dynamic and energetic mental health professional who continues to work on State Councils, Task Forces and Community Committees. She is the National Correspondent for the OMNI Youth Music Awards which provides youth up to 21 years of age who are from low income families the opportunity to learn music, dance and drama and then compete and perform once a year at the Skirball Cultural Center.
Dr. Mathis has received the Santa Clarita Woman of Distinction Award and Woman of the Year Award, 2003 Newsmaker Award, and an OMNI Service Award in 2004 and 2006 and is in Strathmore's Who's Who as well as the Professional Women's Who Who. She was selected as the Glendale Soroptimist International Club's "Making a Difference for Women" award in 2007. She has been asked to go to China and Africa for the past two years and again in 2008 to help with domestic violence program development and implementation. Dr. Mathis received awards from the Los Angeles County Domestic Violence Council in recognition of her outstanding dedication to the issues of domestic violence and a proclamation from the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors for her outstanding service and contributions to women and families of domestic violence.
Dr. Kathie Mathis has been, for over 20 years, working in the domestic violence and child abuse field, as well as drug and sex addiction arenas. She filmed in May 2006 an eight segment international television series on relationships, child abuse, domestic abuse, teen dating abuse, bullying and parenting topics. She was asked again in January 2007 and filmed another 8 series television program series on issues of adult abuse, throw away babies, long term effects of child abuse, elder abuse and more. She has been the Keynote Speaker at State and National Conventions.
Dr. Mathis is a published author. She has developed a national training program for Court Certified Advocates and a mentoring program for Armenian and Spanish speaking communities. She wrote a children's book entitled "Montana and her Magic Carpet" and is almost finished writing a book on domestic violence entitled "Golden Handcuffs."
