Domestic Violence Statistics

These staggering statistics are taken from the American Medical Association, Dept. of Justice, National Clearinghouse for the Defense of Battered Women

  • Domestic violence affects women of all races.
  • 74% of employed battered women were harassed by their partner while at work.
  • Homicide was the second leading cause of death on the job for women in 2000.
  • More than 1 million women are stalked each year and over a quarter report missing work as a result of the stalking.
  • 57% of senior corporate executive believe domestic violence is a major problem in society and 66% believe their company’s financial performance would benefit from addressing the issue of domestic violence among their employees.
  • Over 4 million women are victims of severe assaults by their boyfriends/husbands.
  • 1 in 4 women are abused in their lifetime in the U.S. Worldwide it is 1 in 3 women.
  • Female victims of domestic violence are 3 times more than male victims.
  • Victims of domestic violence are 85% female in reported cases. 64% are white and the average age is 31.
  • Aug. 1989 to Jan, 1990 Midwestern State University did a study on a statewide mail survey of 6000 women. 50% said they had incomes above $35,000. 70% were Anglo, 10.4% African American, 9.5% Hispanic. Education profile showed that 18% had a Bachelors degree or higher.
  • Women are 5-8 times more likely than men to be victimized by an intimate partner.
  • As many as 324,000 women in the U.S. each year experience intimate partner violence during their pregnancy.
  • Male violence against women does more damage than female violence against men.
  • Women are 7-14 times more likely than men to report suffering from physical assaults from an intimate partner.
